Abstract

In linguistics, valency can be defined as the number and type of combinations that the syntactic elements of a sentence can form with one other., i.e. the capability of the verb to take a definite amount and type of arguments/noun phrase positions. It seems that in specialized literature there is no unanimity regarding the issue when and by whom the term valence was used in linguistics first.
