    21st century literacies: changing the paradigm in education [Articol]

    21st century advanced technology has changed society greatly, and educators agree that education today means getting prepared for an unpredictable future. Therefore, such concepts as learning outcomes and literacy need to be redefined. The article draws on the extended meaning of literacy and defines it as a set of foundational skills and knowledge that all students need in order to achieve the learning outcomes associated with the qualities of an educated person, ready to enter a competitive labour market. The article suggests that studying a foreign language may be viewed as an efficient tool in developing 21st century literacies, thus it should be an obligatory part in future specialists’ formation.

    Assessment for learning: why formative assessment matters [Articol]

    The present research focuses on clarifying the concept of formative assessment as well as revealing its role in improving learning. Research evidence is provided to prove that assessment should not be viewed as a period of evaluating students’ learning outcomes. It is rather an efficient tool, providing both the teacher and the learner feedback on the learning process and progress. This approach shaped the content of the Competence Based Tests, designed to complete the set of new textbooks in English for the primary school in Moldova.

    Deepening understanding of literary texts with active reading [Articol]

    As reading proficiency is a fundamental skill for academic learning and success, it is essential to be aware of the students‘ reading habits and skills and consolidate these skills by using appropriate reading strategies, when necessary. This study aims to explore the advantages of active reading strategies in deepening students‘ understanding of literary texts. The study responds to the increasing concern that the number of students who are not prepared to discuss readings in class is growing.

Articolul analizează diverse abordări şi definiţii ale acestui concept complex de către experţi străini şi autohtoni, astfel specificând abilităţile cuprinse în această competenţă. Exemplificând existenţa a mai multor nivele de competenţă literară şi a diferitor profiluri de cititori, articolul scoate în evidenţă caracterul distinctiv al predării literaturii studenţilor filologi, viitorilor profesori de limbă engleză. Scopul, obiectivele şi finalităţile exprimate prin competenţe urmează a fi gândite şi formulate cu multă grijă, dat fiind faptul că instruirea este în limba engleză.

As reading is the best way to discover and understand literature, it is important to identify effective means of involving students in active, meaningful reading procedures. The article provides an example of how to make the reading of J. Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels’ more engaging for students, applying Gardner’s MI theory.

    On the implementation of a competence based curriculum in the Republic of Moldova [Articol]

    The article deals with examining the new competence based curricula that have been introduced in the Republic of Moldova responding to the demands of the contemporary information / knowledge based society. The curricula content is participatory, contextualized, process‐oriented, dynamic, interdisciplinary and adaptable to changes and advances in the pedagogical disciplines as well as in society at large. However, implementing the curricula demands a lot of commitment from all participants. Teachers mainly need to develop clear understanding of ‘competence’ and revise the teaching–learning process in order to develop and consolidate their students’ competences.

    Process approach to teaching Academic Writing [Articol]

    The article reports on the personal experience of the author in designing an Academic Writing course for undergraduate student based on theprocess approach to teaching. Instead of concentrating on students’ final written product and making critical comments on it, teachers can help students write better by aiding them in the actual process of writing, by finding the source of their problems in creating good written texts and enabling them to overcome those difficulties. The article provides recommendations on how to integrate a process-based approach to teaching writing.

    SMART projects to develop young learners' competences in EFL [Articol]

    Curriculumul la Limba străină, aprobat în 2019, reiterează importanța învățămân-tului formativ-dezvoltativ și optează pentru deplasarea accentului de pe procesul de predare pe cel de învăţare. Formarea competențelor pentru secolul 21 necesită promovarea alternativelor metodo-logice de predare-învățare-evaluare, or învățarea în bază de proiecte constituie o asemenea alter-nativă. Articolul reliefează beneficiile implicării elevilor in proiecte cu condiția că profesorii vor aplica metoda SMART în specificarea obiectivelor și vor respecta etapele de implementare ale proiectului. Articolul prezinta un model de proiect, elaborat pentru a fi implementat la disciplina limba engleză cu elevii din clasa a 5-a. Proiectul cu deschidere interdisciplinară încurajează inte-racțiunea pozitivă, motivația și implicarea elevilor în propria învățare.
