    Challenges of Teaching EFL to Part-Time Students in Moldova [Articol]

    În ultimii ani, instituţiile de învăţământ superior din Moldova au experimentat o creş-tere semnificativă a numărului de studenţi în diverse programe de studiu în regim redus determinată de motive socio-economice variate şi anumite caracteristici proprii acestor programe. În general, cur-surile cu frecvenţă redusă, definite ca o formă flexibilă, eficientă, deschisă şi democratică de educaţie profesională continuă, îşi propun nu doar furnizarea de cunoştinţe profesionale şi competenţe cores-punzătoare, ci şi sporirea activităţii cognitive, creşterea personală, realizările în învăţare şi indepen-denţa în diverse activităţi academice. Deoarece cunoaşterea unei limbi străine este recunoscută ca o competenţă fundamentală pentru a rezista concurenţei în piaţa contemporană a muncii şi pentru a accesa cele mai inovatoare informaţii disponibile, cursurile de limba engleză I şi II au devenit compo-nente integrale ale tuturor planurilor de studii universitare destinate studenţilor cu normă parţială în programele de licenţă. Cu toate acestea, trebuie menţionat că, în prezent, bazele teoretice şi metodo-logice pentru predarea limbii engleze studenţilor cu normă parţială nu sunt suficient de dezvoltate şi se bazează în mod tradiţional pe strategii şi tehnici pedagogice comune, fără a recunoaşte numeroasele provocări impuse de programele universitare cu normă parţială. Astfel, profesorul de limbă engleză se confruntă permanent cu diverse provocări ale acestor programe, luând în considerare în mod constant diferenţele de percepţie a materialului şi competenţelor de către studenţii adulţi, non-uniformitatea vârstei studenţilor, precum şi particularităţile motivaţiei intrinseci şi angajamentului extrinsec.

    Phytotherapeutic plants: official and vernacular names (english and romanian) compared [Articol]

    The article presents the comparative analysis of the official and vernacular names of medicinal plants in the English, Romanian and Latin languages, simultaneously focusing on the mechanisms of their etymology as well as the criteria, which conditioned their origin and evolution. The features, both specific and typical of the mentality of the nations are being highlighted while analyzing the names of phytotherapeutic plants.

    Pragmatics and language teaching [Articol]

    The goal of this paper is to explore the notion of teaching with respect to pragmatics, the role that pragmatics research plays or should play in bringing pragmatics into the language classroom. The paper also studies the classroom as a source of input, and the role of classroom activities and pedagogical materials as part of that input, proving that bringing pragmatics into the classroom successfully will require the joint effort of many professionals involved in different endeavours related to it.

    The psychological facets of Katherine Mansfield’s short stories [Articol]

    The present article studies the specific features of the English short story of the beginning of the 20-th century on the example of Katherine Mansfield’s literary works that are in themselves an ideal standard of the pshychological reflection of the human being. Katherine Mansfield literally revolutionized the development of the short story genre, realistically reflecting the everyday details of the epoch, simultaneously creating the literary atmosphere characteristic of English society of the period of modernism.

    Rethinking the Role of Translation in the EFL Classroom [Articol]

    Проблема использования перевода как одного из способов обучения иностранному языку всегда оставалась в центре внимания лингвистов и методистов, обосновывающих эффективность и рациональность его продуманного и своевременного применения. Однако, проведя тщательный сопоставительный анализ учебников по английскому языку для лицейских классов Молдовы и, соответственно, старших классов российских школ, авторы пришли к выводу, что молдавские учебники не только не предлагают учащимся никаких практических упражнений на перевод, но и полностью отвергают саму идею возможности использования родного языка на уроках английского, что не соответствует современной концепции преподавания иностранных языков.

    Taxonomy of educational chats for EFL learners [Articol]

    Chat is an unexploited tool for language learning and teacher development. Teachers should especially consider the collaborative construction of knowledge that can take place through chat. Social constructivism emphasizes the importance of learning through social interaction and collaboration (von Glaserfeld, 1989), and chat seems to be the ideal space for this kind of learning.

    Various approaches to EFL lesson design at university level [Articol]

    Predarea unei limbi străine este o muncă grea şi asiduă. Înainte de a intra la oră un profesor de limbă străină trebuie să ia în considerare numeroase aspecte ce ţin de predarea unei limbi străine, inclusiv de planificare. Pregătirea pentru lecţie şi planificarea lecţiei, aspecte esenţiale ale procesului de predare a limbilor străine, sunt destul de greu de a învăţa, ele îmbunătăţindu-se odată cu experienţa obţinută. Mai mult decât atât, ele nu sunt aspecte izolate de predare, ci sunt o parte importantă a unui proces ciclic global care implică pedagogia, curriculumul, învăţarea şi evaluarea. Prin urmare, o lecţie bună poate fi asigurată numai printr-o procedură bine gândită. Prezentul articol se axează pe aspectul proiectării unei lecţii de limba engleză ca limbă străină ( EFL) la nivel universitar. Autorii s-au întrebat dacă ar trebui să existe o abordare diferită a planificării EFL în universităţi faţă de modelul utilizat în şcoli şi licee. Vom oferi date din propria noastră experiență, precum şi date ce reies din înţelegerea acestei probleme de către colegii noştri universitari.

    Загальнонаціональні риси функціонування українських мовних символів у кіноповісті О. Довженка «Зачарована Десна» [Articol]

    The article analyses the semantic symbols due to which the live connection between the man, language and culture is created; with archetypical symbols performing the significant role. The classification of the symbols employed in A. Dovzhenko’s cinema-novel “The Enchanted Desna” is being performed and their function in the fictional discourse has been defined. Words-symbols create a complex and rich system in which different types of relations, that is paradigmatic, syntagmatic and phraseological ones are inherent. The linguistic symbols used in A. Dovzhenko’s work acquire the specific national colouring; demonstrate the high level of the Ukrainian people’s intellectuality as well as the remarkable diversity of the Ukrainian linguistic expressive means. The symbol as a verbal sign, the semantics of which being the result of integration and reinterpretation on the level of associations of its direct, figurative, connotative meanings under the specific influence of national cultural context, is formed as a result of metonymic or metaphoric transformations. The symbol also serves as a means of artistic expression in which the conceptual and artistic energy of the cinema-novel “The Enchanted Desna” is accumulated and the author’s most vivid perceptions of the world are focused.
